- Older versions of Backup Exec (those prior to Backup Exec 2010 R3) must be uninstalled before installing Backup Exec 16. Alternatively, for customers who are using Backup Exec 12.5, 12, 11d, 10d, 10 or older versions (including agents/options), you can upgrade in steps to Backup Exec 2014, update all remote agents, and then upgrade to version 16.

You can use the same code every day, one time. You can use it on different PC’s. If you want to use more software’s you will need to purchase another code.

The Backup Exec portfolio includes a number of flexible and scalable options:
- Backup Exec 16: per server/option
- Backup Exec 16 V-Ray Edition: per occupied socket
- Backup Exec 16 Capacity Edition Lite: per TB with unlimited agents
- Backup Exec 16 Capacity Edition: per TB with unlimited agents and options

5. What do I need to know about the rebranding?
Backup Exec 16 is back with Veritas branding. The Backup Exec Administration Console and installation screens now vividly display the Veritas branding and the new Backup Exec logo. Veritas has a renewed commitment to Backup Exec product improvements, support enhancements, and the end-user experience.
6. Will I be notified if I can upgrade?
Notification of a Software Version Upgrade automatically occurs via email. Each active member of the customer’s Licensing Portal account will receive this upgrade notification. If a notification does not reach a customer by email, the license owner may visit the Licensing Portal to access the pending upgrade opportunity using the following steps:
- Login into MyVeritas.
- Select the Licensing tab to access the Licensing Portal.
- Select the Licensing Portal Home page and refer to the Recent Notifications section to see the latest communications from Veritas including Software Version Upgrade notifications.

7. Who should use Backup Exec 16?
Whether you need to protect Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware vSphere, physical servers, critical databases or applications, Backup Exec 16 has a portfolio of high-powered agents and options to reliably protect your organization’s information.
8. Were any features removed or capabilities removed from Backup Exec 16?
Yes.
Backup Exec 16 has discontinued support for Windows Server 2003 32-bit and Windows Server 2003 64-bit. However, Backup Exec continues to protect 32-bit Windows physical and virtual machines which have the Backup Exec Windows Remote Agent installed.The Agent for Lotus Domino has reached End-of-Life in Backup Exec 16. Backup Exec 16 does not support a push installation of the Agent for Mac.
9. How will I receive this version if I’m current on maintenance?
Current Veritas customers with maintenance or support for any Veritas product are entitled to a free software version upgrade for any new release of that product or its successor. See question 6 for instructions on how to access your entitlement.
10. Is there a fee to upgrade?
Existing customers with active maintenance can upgrade the appropriate Backup Exec 16 licenses free of charge. Customers who do not have an active maintenance contract or new customers switching to Backup Exec 16 can save up to 35% off MSRP when they upgrade. 11. What is the earliest version of Backup Exec that allows for a direct upgrade to Backup Exec 16?
If you are using Backup Exec from 2012 or newer you can simply download the latest version over your existing versions of Backup Exec. Note: Backup Exec will automatically migrate existing Backup Exec related data from versions 2012 and higher to version 16. For clients who are using earlier versions, you may have to purchase a new license.
12. What about backward compatibility with Backup Exec 16?
Yes. Backup Exec 16 is backward compatible with Backup Exec 2010 R3-SP4 and newer versions. Older versions of Backup Exec (those prior to Backup Exec 2010 R3) must be uninstalled before installing Backup Exec 16. Alternatively, for customers who are using Backup Exec 12.5, 12, 11d, 10d, 10 or older versions (including agents/options), you can upgrade in steps to Backup Exec 2014, update all remote agents, and then upgrade to version 16.
13. Do I have to upgrade all agents/options at the same time when I upgrade the core media server to Backup Exec 16?
Yes. You will need new license files for Backup Exec 16 Agents and Options.

15. I’m an existing Backup Exec customer. How do I evaluate non-licensed agents and options?
A feature within Backup Exec allows clients who have already purchased Backup Exec to evaluate most non-licensed Backup Exec agents or options available, free for 60 days. This list includes, but is not limited to the agent for Applications and Databases (which includes Exchange, SQL, Active Directory, etc.); Agents for Linux or Macintosh; and such options as the Deduplication or NDMP Option.

Veritas Technologies has made the process of a Backup Exec 16 upgrade relatively easy. In-place upgrades are possible as long as an organization is using version 2010 R3 or higher, and is not running Backup Exec on a 32-bit OS.
Organizations running an earlier version of Backup Exec can theoretically still perform an in-place upgrade if Backup Exec is running on a 64-bit OS, but a multistep upgrade would be required. This means the organization would have to perform a preliminary upgrade to version 2010 R3 or higher, and then a secondary Backup Exec 16 upgrade.
When performing an in-place upgrade, Backup Exec preserves all of the catalogs and data directories from the previous version, unless you opt to remove them. The upgrade process also retains most of the previous version's settings, with the exception of custom filters and custom descriptions of managed media servers and remote agents. Support for these features was discontinued in Backup Exec 2012.

The next step is to clean up your existing Backup Exec deployment. Veritas recommends running a database maintenance job and deleting any job histories and catalogs you won't need in the future.
It is also important to install any available updates for your current Backup Exec version before attempting an upgrade.
